How has this first year been?
The first year has been a lot of things. Exciting, frustrating, educational and a great experience. It’s been exciting with a new country, a new league and a new team, but also very frustrating with the injury and how long I was unable to play. At the same time, I’ve learned an incredible amount both on and off the pitch, and I’ve grown a lot as a person.
What has surprised you the most?
What surprised me the most is probably how physical this league is. I knew that beforehand, but it’s different when you actually feel it on your own body. The number of sprint metres, duels and overall physical demands are probably the biggest difference compared to playing in Norway.
The club invested heavily in the summer and the competition for attacking positions is fierce. How do you see that?
Yes, there’s a big difference in the squad now compared to when I arrived a little over a year ago. Almost everyone I compete with now has experience from the Premier League, so it goes without saying that the competition for playing time is extremely tough. But as a professional athlete, that’s what you want. You want to play on the best team, with and against the best players. You also want to compete at the top, and that requires strong teammates. So it’s actually very exciting to challenge yourself every single day.
It seems like you have a very good relationship with the fans. You’ve also been a match winner in several games this winter, which probably helps! How would you describe that relationship?
The fans here are massive. We have a huge and loyal fanbase that truly lives and breathes Derby County. As a player, that’s exactly what you want — to play in front of as many people who care as possible. When they give so much to us, I just want to give everything back to them. I’m very happy about the relationship I have with the fans and I love playing for them.
What has been the highlight of the season?
Personally, the biggest moment of the season for me was when I scored the winner at home against Hull in November. It was my first goal of the season and my first goal after six months out injured. Scoring the winning goal at home in front of the fans made it even more special.
Who is the toughest opponent you have faced in England?
The toughest opponent in my opinion is probably not someone that many people know. His name is Anel Ahmedhodzic, who played for Sheffield United last year. An extremely good centre-back — strong, fast, good on the ball and with very few weaknesses. Besides him, there have been several big names and interesting players we’ve faced over the past year, such as Ashley Young, Moussa Sissoko and Jobe Bellingham. We also played Leeds United earlier this year in the cup.
